Citrix and Terminal Server Solutions have provided tremendous return on investment for corporate IT desktop management in terms of reduced total cost of ownership (TCO), ease of maintenance, system stability, and security.  However, applications aren’t always designed to run in a Citrix and Terminal Server environment.  This results in a number of technical challenges including problematic attempts by an application to write to the registry and the need to store user-specific data in global locations on the file system.

 

VMware ThinApp (formerly Thinstall) enables applications to run flawlessly in a Citrix and Terminal Server environment. ThinApp provides benefits of:

• Running multiple instances of an application concurrently. For example, application virtualization allows applications to write to global locations and changes made by the application will be visible only to that particular application.
• Reducing cost by reducing the number of additional Citrix servers that are required to run as application silos in order to prevent conflicts.
• Enabling applications to redirect file writes from global locations to user specific locations.
• Package all the runtime components into a single EXE.  When the application loads or uses the runtime components bound into the package, the runtime components will be presented with the same virtualized environment the users sees.

 

Because ThinApp runs completely in user mode without kernel mode drivers it is safe to use in Terminal Server and Citrix environments with no possibility of introducing system crashes or circumventing per-user network, file system, and registry security policies.
